Netvibes vs. Pageflakes - statistics
Today I will start a new category on my blog - Netvibes vs. Pageflakes. Here I will write about these two online RSS readers who I think is very similar and I want to decide which is better. Every post will be about on of the features who are in these two RSS readers and I will try to compare them.
My first post will be about popularity of these two RSS aggregators. I will use the Alexa traffic rankings to show the stats of Netvibes and Pageflakes.
I used 1 year graph to see which project have better ranking on Alexa. How you can see - today netvibes.com is much more popular then pagefalkes.com and this jump Netvibes made in April this year. Because I’m using Netvibes (and also Pageflakes) I know that in April they have very important upgrades that maybe is the reason of that jump. And I almost forgot (thank you Ole) - in the middle of April Netvibes become as one of standard choises in feedburner.com. A couple of weeks later Pageflakes also was added. Maybee Later we will see pageflakes jump also!
I think very interesting situation we can see in middle of December when Pageflakes made a great ranking - is that because they are Netvibes clone? Maybe! For me it isn’t a problem to use things that are made on base of others - for me most important thing is if the project can give me better and most advanced features than 1st one - and that is why I started this category on my blog!

1) Pageflakes has launched its beta version in February 2006. This the 1 year comparison makes little sense.
2) NV and PF are not just RSS readers. They are personalized start pages that offer other modules. NV offers roughly 20 modules, Pageflakes offers roughly 70 modules.
3) Alexa is biased towards US traffic. Sites that are popular outise the US market are displyed unproportionally low in the graph.
4) NV’s peak in traffic is most likely based on the fact that they have become a standard coice in feedburner.com subscription. PF has also become a standard subscription there - just 2 weeks later.

May 3rd, 2006 at 11:59 pmPageflakes now has Publish and Share feature. This is something brand new. Never seen in any start page so far. Publishing a page makes it public. So, everyone can see that page. You can create pages like “Home”, “About me”, “Contact”, “My posts” etc and make them public. It’s a quick and easy way to make a personal site.
The best thing is the share feature. When a page is shared with friends, together they can work on the same page. Great way to collaborate and keep team todo lists.

Let’s admit it, Pageflakes first introduced multiple pages. Netvibes copied it later on. Pageflakes had an open API which is far better than live.com, Google IG and they had it since their begining. Netvibes has just started to provide some API for users. Pageflakes offers an exceptional feature like running modules from own server which allows us like third party content providers to slip stream inside Pageflakes and provide our services to thousands of users. I am sure Netvibes is going to copy this soon also. Calling Pageflakes a Netvibes clone is surely wrong, it should be vice-versa from these 3 occurences. Also look at their amazing 67 modules! THey surely have a superb infrastructure for building modules and extending their system. And now they have pioneered the Start Page conept by introducing the Publish and Share page concept. Surely Netvibes will copy this feature soon also.
