Torrent Software for Mac OS X: Transmission and Xtorrent
Advertisements
Which is the best torrent client for Mac users? I think after uTorrent release for Mac it will be the most powerful client for Apple users - I’m using this client in Windows and I must say that it is really great and I never thought to change it to some other torrent software. Ok, so which software to download now and what alternative have Mac users at he moment?
Transmission

After reading some reviews it looks like Transmission is very powerful BitTorrent client for Mac. It is feature rich application but also developers is trying to keep it simple and intuitive. Speaking about development Transmission is fully open source project and anyone who have ideas to help this project can join the team.
Xtorrent - Hardcore Technology, Mac Simplicity

This BitTorrent client for Mac OS X is really full with different features and multimedia stuff. Support of iTunes, iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV and many other features speaks for it self. Reading about this torrent client gives you the feeling that it is all you need and maybe because of this feeling you need to pay to use it :) But how I said - it is worth to purchase this application!

July 1st, 2007 at 2:28 pmThanks for the heads up. I was using Tomato, but it didn’t fit me really well. I ended up downloading torrents in Opera (which isn’t exactly perfect, but simple enough)… I don\t torrent like crazy, but I use it now and than so I’m looking for something simple. I’m going for transmission.

July 1st, 2007 at 3:01 pmat the beginning i was using Transmission but i really didn’t like that i can’t see detailed information about torrent. and now i’m happy Azureus (vuze version) user.

July 1st, 2007 at 7:27 pmThe ideal torrent client for me is one that sits on my server and waits for torrents I drop into a directory.
Transmission is meant to do this, but it isn’t working how it’s meant to. Might be just my set up.
@Joriks, you can bring up a detailed info panel on each client in the latest (maybe beta) version of transmission.

July 5th, 2007 at 8:15 amPff…Switching transmission to utorrent?! - NEVER!! :) I love the simplicity of transmission, utorrent is jsut a shortened version of bitcomet, which is, how to say.., full of crap?

March 16th, 2008 at 5:24 amBitcomet is the sh** way better then almost every other torrent program out there

March 21st, 2008 at 12:31 amFor a while XTorrent was great, so great I was happy to pay for Pro, but after a couple months it has gone downhill. It freezes randomly, causing a ForceQuit necessary, very frustrating on large files which then have to restart. I don’t know why this is happening, but it is very frustrating.

April 18th, 2008 at 6:46 amAll torrent clients act the exact same, what makes different torrents better or worse is the accessibility of the clients and all available settings. Full customization of torrent clients is what to look for when choosing a client. I haven’t tried any clients for mac osx but for windows, wine and other UTorrent I found is the best client BUT only after customizing and changing settings. Azeurus is good for beginners but I’ve gotten the best speeds of around a STEADY 200-250 somethin kb / sec I’ve gotten spikes to like 400 but quickly drops and I’ve also gotten surges.. or spikes I dunno which is which but around 2 kb / sec thats pretty rare and if not many people seeding (bastards) Speeds with a 8mb connection. Also with any torrent, MAKE SURE DATA ENCRYPTION IS TURNED ON!!!! It’s REALLY easy to be caught downloading games or music with torrents. With all clients, makes sure you refresh peer lists and clear bans frequently. Good luck…

April 24th, 2008 at 9:13 pmTransmission is not as fast as Azureus on OSX. It kept freezing up on me. I would love to see a version of uTorrent for Macs. Never tried Xtorrent. I say Azureus is the way to go.

July 1st, 2008 at 11:36 pmHey i really dont understand how this torrent works…i was looking for microsoft word?!
Niels Says:
July 18th, 2008 at 5:43 amI’m also waiting for uTorrent for Mac OSX. uTorrent is really the best client ever, simple, and extremely smart with caching (doesn’t write to the harddisk continuously, which is required when you’re on a 100Mbit connection like I am). Anyway, untill uTorrent hasn’t been ported properly yet….

July 23rd, 2008 at 10:51 amxTorrent is ok, but it doesn’t allow selective downloading. Otherwise great.

August 9th, 2008 at 4:04 pmJust Sad… Mac is all about good visualitions. Torrent programs are totally crap, and they wount want to stard downloading stuff you want. uTorrent is the best possible kind of torrent program you want. tomato, aquistic,x are all bullshit. Mac isnt so reliable when it comes to torrenting. Mac is over priced loser and there is nothing good about owning a macintosh fucker.
Get Bent Says:
August 24th, 2008 at 1:11 pmTransmission works just fine. The latest update provides detailed torrent info and storm tracking.
As for Mr. YouAllLiveInALie!, hey; 1995 called. It wants it’s platform war back. Get a life. This was an article that provided a product review for the Macintosh platform, not an excuse for you to try to resurrect one of the lamest platform arguments to ever hit the mainstream.
… and if you really want to start some shit, think about this. YOU are just sad. You are a poor, lower class scrub who will never afford quality equipment. You will never appreciate the finer things in life. Have fun driving your beater car to the welfare office, so you can later purchase some McDonald’s to eat while you steal software and movies you can never afford. Go cry to Mama about how mean the internet is and how all the kids laugh at you because you’re poor; because right now, every Mac user reading this is laughing at your impoverished, sorry ass and anyone else like you.

September 21st, 2008 at 6:24 pmGood point Get Bent, except for the one comment about stealing software and movies, that’s sort of what the whole torrent thing is about and you’re in here being part of it, with or without a mac. Still, yes, I’m laughing at the guy and your post is HILARIOUS!
Justin Bryant Says:
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:52 pmwell bent. You are the true n00b. You spend shit tons of money on a mac and i bet you don’t do shit with it. I code ruby on rails and iPhone applications and the only reason I ever USE a mac, is because my work bought it for me. I would never waste my money on this over priced piece of crap. I enjoy my 500 dollar 1.7 ghz single processor over this douchey shit anyways. uTorrent is the shit. Its people like you who give Mac its snobby, smuggish smell my own ass fart vibe that we true (SMART) PC users DESPISE! Get a life you rich prick. uTorrent 4 lyfe!

October 1st, 2008 at 7:27 pmYou guys are both lame. Anyone who gets in a flame war over the net hasn’t figured out yet that they are completely worthless.
Enough said.
Pleather Says:
October 6th, 2008 at 3:16 amI couldn’t agree more ‘ugh’. I will admit I’m still a Mac user, and I regret being brought up solely that way, but I really have trouble using a PC compared to how good I am with Macs now, so I routinely use Macs regardless…
But all in all, the flame wars are stupid, and just cause someone owns a particular OS doesn’t make them any different, buying a Mac doesn’t make you a rich, snobby, prick, nor does buying a PC immediately qualify you as a lowlife hobo. It’s a simple matter of preference, its not life threatening decision, get the fuck over it.

October 24th, 2008 at 4:11 amNow the only plausible argument is one of facts and a wide scope of perspective. Those who succumb to close-mindedness and who bash others based on their operating system of choice, display unjustified, uneducated, irrational arguments. Learn to respect the power of perspective and preference. To YouAllLiveInALie and Justin Bryant, I don’t think you’re bad people however I strongly feel a sense disgust for how you manage to make your arguments.
I agree with Pleather to stress the fact that arguing about trivial things like this is preposterous.
I use three operating systems, the Mac OS, Windows OS and Linux OS and all of them are great.
-Mac for its simplicity and security for no viruses.
-Windows for its plethora of software and my familiarity with it.
-Linux for its user-defined aspect to it.
Just thought I’d throw it out there.
