phonesPew Internet and American Life Project have released some very interesting survey results that reveal - to no surprise - that the number of young adults participating in digital activities is on the rise.  In fact, 62% of all Americans go wireless/mobile away from home or work. Also, what if you had to give up a certain type of technology?  It looks like the number of people willing to give up landline telephones in lieu of their wireless devices is on the rise.

Hispanics and black young adults lead the way with handheld devices, especially when it comes to video, maps, instant messaging, taking photos and playing games. However, white Americans tend to be more likely to own cell phones.

- 84% of English-speaking Hispanics have cell phones.
- 74% of white Americans have cell phones.
- 71% of black Americans have cell phones.

The Pew Internet Project’s December 2007 survey interviewed a sample of 2,054 adult Americans, which included 500 respondents contacted on their cell phones

As you’d expect 18-29 year olds lead the way when it comes to ownership or conducting mobile activities.

The full survey can be viewed here (warning, PDF file).

You better believe that the mobile industry is paying close attention to these results.  You can bet your bottom dollar that they will help dictate the types of mobile services and devices we’ll see in the near future.
