It’s so disheartening to see a social networking or web 2.0 service join the deathpool. More especially if it happens to be one of the major internet player’s property. We’re talking about here of Yahoo’s take on the social networking niche - Yahoo! Mash.

Yahoo! Mash was launched sometime last year. It was a good social networking, lifestreaming, feed aggregator site but lacks the “kicks” to go viral. I tried using it during its initial stage, but had to stop since it didn’t quite got my attention. Or it didn’t have the magic touch to make me stick into using it. So, I guess the rest of the social network-loving crowd feel the same way too about it.

The people behind Yahoo! Mash has started sending emails to members regarding the shutdown of the service. Techcrunch was reporting it awhile ago so I decided to check the Yahoo Mash Blog and found the announcement about it.

Yahoo Mash will officially shut down on September 28, 2008. By then all data you have created on your Yahoo Mash profile will be gone. Likewise all redirections to your Yahoo Mash profile will be redirected to a blank page on Yahoo.

If you’re asking for the reason why Yahoo is shutting the service down, unfortunately you’ll never get an official answer from Yahoo. But it’s obviously due to lack of activity, few membership build-up and it never really pulled a mark in the social networking niche.

We couldn’t help but wonder what’s next for Yahoo’s entry into the social networking after Yahoo Mash. Any guesses?
