I’m a big fan of the Gmail Labs and have been religiously monitoring cool features that the Gmail Labs Team put out every now and then. I’ve tried activating some of those features including offline email viewing, task manager and more. And now, Gmail has just announced another cool feature – previewing YouTube videos, Flickr and Picasa photos and Yelp links right inside Gmail items.

Of course having these features enabled on your Gmail account saves you the trouble of visiting the links to view those videos, photos or links. Now you can immediately determine whether you should check those links or complete skip it and go on with your other tasks.

Like all the other Gmail Labs features, to activate this on your Gmail, just go click on the Labs tab under Settings, and enable the feature.

Hopefully, Gmail preview would include other content sites that is usually attached on Gmail messages aside from YouTube, Picasa, Flickr and Yelp.

Web Designers often find themselves in the Wild Wild West when it comes to job hunting. One thing they often must combat is taking credit for work they’ve actually completed. You see, it’s far too easy for anyone to claim that they designed the Web’s elite.

What if I told you I designed the simplistic look found on Google.com. Would you believe me? Probably not. But nothing would stop me from making that claim on my resume.

A new Website, WhoBuilt.it, hopes to be the solution to the problem. The tool lets you claim a site through a simple registration process where you must provide your birth name and e-mail address.

Recently claimed Websites appear on the site’s homepage.

The site is a no-brainer for anyone who builds/designs Websites. Why not get credit for your hard work> It’s not about bragging, it’s about protecting your professional integrity.

Although there are already a couple of applications that lets you send voice messages to your Facebook contacts, Voicetag however works well with regular phones and SMS messages. Meaning your Facebook friends can receive your voice messages even when they are not on online in Facebook – that is through their mobile phones or through SMS messages.

Voicetag also makes it simpler to leave send a voice message to your Facebook friends. All you need to do is to choose the Facebook contact you want to send a voice message to, then add an optional text message and then enter your own phone number. After a while Voicetag will call you on the number you specify and you can start recording your message.

Voicetag’s Facebook application will then send an alert to your friend notifying them of the voice message you sent. They can play the Voicetag from their Facebook Profile.

In addition to this, Voicetag also lets you leave a voice message to Facebook groups SMS message sent to Voicetag. The same procedure will be followed – that is Voicetag will call your number and then you can start recording your message.

As this involves mobile network time, Voicetag would definitely put a price tag on this service soon. Lucky for us now, the service is still free. So, you better try out the service and start sending those holiday cheers through your own voice message.

To see how Voicetag works while you’re on Facebook, check out this video.

Or this Screenflow diagram of how Voicetag works:

and TC has listed the following features of Voicetag.

The ability to not only record but also deliver voice messages to phones, in addition to the online voice Inbox we have today.

The ability for the message recipient to interact with the message via touch tone when they hear the message on the phone (imagine that you can send out a voice poll on “where do we want to eat tonight? punch 1 for XYZ; punch 2 for ABC”, and get the votes back in text message!)

The ability to start ad hoc group / conference calls among facebook friends.

The ability to call your Facebook friend on the phone no matter where she is in the world, and no matter how many times she has changed her phone number since you last talked.

Continuing our coverage of recent developments in the FriendFeed camp, we just found out that finally the lifestreaming service is introducing some set of easy-to-embed widgets which we can all use easily in our respective sites/blogs. Although some of the contents of these widgets can already be done using RSS the FriendFeed’s official widgets is still a better alternative to displaying your FriendFeed streams and profile into your own blogs or sites.

Here are the FriendFeed widgets that you can use on your own respectives blogs/sites:

FriendFeed Embed Badge – Finally, you can now embed your FF profile badge to your own blogs and websites. Of course, you all know how useful this profile badges are when it comes to letting your readers connect to your FriendFeed updates. Although the default FriendFeed badge looks cool with the standard FF blue theme, some of us would still love to have the capability to customize our FF badges to suit the look and feel of our blogs/sites. Fortunately, FriendFeed allows us to do this, although I would have to say that it would have been better if this is done without touching on the CSS codes. Some who are not familiar with CSS may find this difficult to do, although FriendFeed was generous enough to offer a page explaining how to do this. Hopefully, in the future, FriendFeed would make profile badge customization easier. Here’s my profile badge as an example of how cool this FriendFeed badges are. You may click on the badge to add my profile to your FF list of friends. Other FriendFeed widgets available include:

ShareOn FriendFeed Link – Embed this link to your specific blog posts to let your friends and readers share them on their specific FriendFeed updates

Feed Widget – Lets you share your feed on any site! Embed your feed or a room’s feed on your website or blog with the feed widget. I was actually trying to figure out how to do this a couple of days ago and I couldn’t make it work in my site. Fortunately, FriendFeed seemed to have read my mind and make this feature easy to implement. You can specific which part of your FriendFeed updates you want to feature on this Feed Widget, and you can also specify the number of feeds to display.

Chiclet Widget - This is the eye-candy chicklet that lets you connect your blogs’ readers to your FriendFeed account. It’s a pretty simple widget and all you need to do is to copy and paste the code into your respective sites/blogs.

Status Widget – This widget displays your most recent status messages on your FriendFeed account.

Overall, these widgets add more use and value to the FriendFeed lifestreaming service. Gradually, FriendFeed is establishing itself as a force to reckon with in the Lifestreaming niche, and possibly emerging as the top one at that.

Note: Feel free to click on my FriendFeed badge to connect to my FriendFeed account.

They really have no interest in a lot of the other elements that make a blog successful, such as images.

Picreflect is a neat little Website that can add a new dimension to your blog. Actually, a new reflection. If you have 10 seconds and a digital photo, you can add a reflection. All you have to do is indicate the following:Height of reflection
Percentage of transparency
Final picture size
If you want the photo flipped
Rotation
Background color

Just like magic, you’re Bob Ross (the late, great PBS painter)! You can download your enhanced image and use as desired.

The Website is clutter-free without and annoying ads.

If you enjoy adding reflections, don’t forget about the Website’s sister, Picshadow.

And if you don’t want to spring for Photoshop, and are looking for a more robust solution, check out:

Everyone’s dream of becoming famous may finally come true with the help of pYZam, a MySpace application that lets you find out exactly how famous you are on MySpace. When you install pYZam on your MySpace account, it will immediately calculate your fame rankings as well as compares you to your friends, people in your state, and practically everyone across the universe.

PYZam also lets your family and friends vote for you on MySpace. And I guess you by now that the more votes you get, the more famous you become. If your family and friends’ votes are not enough to catapult you to MySpace stardom, you may also try to refer your friends and family to use the application like you do. Or, you can even go further by promoting your MySpace profile in your other social networks or blogs. The more people view your profile, the higher your chances of becoming the most popular MySpace member.

And what’s the price you have to pay for that Fame? Unlike other kinds of fame, pYZam doesn’t collect any money from you. All you have to do is to install the pYZam application in your MySpace account and you’re on your way to your dream

You can learn how to design Web themes and templates with recently launched ThemesWiki.org. The wiki’s goal is to create a comprehensive destination that will make the design process easier with a repository of free guides.Regardless of the application utilized (Mambo, Joomla, Drupal, Plone, Modx, etc.), you will find tons of tutorials in a single location.

The Website was initially launched featuring tutorials covering over 20 Content Management Systems. However, the site’s creators (Packt) saw a greater need for an exhaustive free resource for the theming community.

Of course, like any wiki, the success of this Website will be determined by level of user-generated content and interaction.

According to Ric Shreves, author of the Packt book, Drupal 5 Themes,
“ThemesWiki.org promises to fill a much needed gap in the theming and templating community.”

The team behind this new wiki also run a Website on free installation tutorials, InstallationWiki.org, and the annual Open Source CMS Award that has a total prize package of $20,000 to be divided among several winning projects.

Open source MediaWiki are the bones behind the Website.

We encourage you to check out Themes Wiki and get involved.

New, better design for RotorBlog is up and running.

Last time I redesigned this blog in 1st May last year when blog turned one year old. It was also important because I participated in 1st may reboot event and we, together with other Latvian bloggers, had pretty interesting and notable local event/party. After that I decided to redesign Rotor every year in 1st May as we thought to stick to this tradition and redesign our websites together with others all over the world. But now you can see I have changed my mind and launched new design already.

There are several reasons why I did this. First one is that the previous design was old. Yes, I didn’t like it anymore and I wanted to come up with something new to add more solid look to the blog.

Second reason is that I redesigned Rotor last year because of 1st May reboot event. This event, I think, was pretty important to the Latvian blogosphere and I wanted to participate. So, this weekend we have one much more important event – BarCamp Baltics 2008! So, I decided to launch new design right now and dedicate it to the Barcamp event as I think the event will be just great and will shake the web industry people in this region. I will try to write couple posts about what’s interesting will happen here these days in Riga so stay tuned!

Also it would be very nice to hear your thoughts about now design so feel free to add your comments below!

Looks like there is now trend on MySpace – Flash based layouts. Comparing to ‘old fashion‘ html/css layouts you can have profile page that really stands out – where everything is moving and shaking.

It seams like the number one player in the field right now is Love My Flash that offers high quality flash layouts which are highly popular between MySpace users. But what’s interesting that there is no other sites that actually offer flash layouts – oops, no! There is one here. But it looks like that’s it. Does anyon know some other sites?

Just to illustrate how cool these layouts are here are couple screens (LoveMyFlash layouts):

I must admit that I admire social networkers who have the time to modify their profiles’ layouts with cool and punky backgrounds that may annoy us oldies, but then you got to give it to the young generation for having the patience and the ingenuity to liven up their social networking profiles. But thanks to SpaceGravy.com, us older generations of the web can now have the chance to liven up our otherwise boring social networking profiles with cutesy and artsy backgrounds and themes.

SpaceGravy.com is a convenient location where you can find free stuff for social networking sites that includes Friendster, Xanga, MyYearbook, Virb and MySpace. The site even offers easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions on how to install the following free stuffs for your social networking profiles:

layouts,

backgrounds,

contact tables,

extended network banners,

glitter graphics,

text generators

and flash widgets

So, are you ready to prep up your social networking profiles? You can do it in three simple steps at SpaceGravy.com.

Go to the SpaceGravy main site and click on the “select profile website” tab located on the upper right hand side of the main portal,

Select what design category you would like to enhance (layouts, backgrounds, etc.),

Select the design you want and click on the “Click here to copy code”,

And as an example to add the code in your MySpace profile, just do the following steps:

Login to your MySpace profile,

Click on the “Edit Profile” link,

Right click inside the “About Me” box, and choose select all in the pull down menu,

Right click again and click on paste,

Preview your new profile,

Then save if you are satisfied with the result.

Easy right? Check out my MySpace profile where I used an anime design for the background.

Known as Personas, Firefox is attempting to streamline the process of finding and installing themes. With the new addition graphic designers can stylize the browser experience without the need to know code.

The ability also exists to include items such as HTML, CSS, PNG, JPG, SVG, Javascript and Canvas.

Will browsers ever become more than desktop software? Mozilla certainly hopes so and continues to pave the way with online components such as Personas.

Install here

Other Personas features include on-the-fly updates as you create and edit as well as the ability for designers to make changes and/or updates without having to update any software.

For folks who want their Web surfing experience to be a bit more fun and personal, Personas are worth checking out. These designs that “skin” the Firefox Web browser are sure to brighten your day.

A few weeks ago we profiled flauntR as a potential Photoshop killer.

Photoshop might be the photo manipulation leader, but with a high price tag and slow load times, what could be better than a free and fast alternative? FlauntR’s PhotoStylr offers thousands of free one-click effects, including fancy frames and funky filters.

Read the complete entry here.

Now, the vowel-phobic site has added even more features, including:

photoprintR: Print your flauntR creations from dozens of merchandise options including mugs, apparel, bags, and different poster print sizes

photoprofilR: One click photo profile creation for more than 30 social networks! Get your photos automatically resized for that perfect profile image!

photomobilR: One click mobile wallpaper creation for over 250 mobile models! Get your photos edited, styled and resized to fit your mobile perfectly!

In addition, you can now get flauntR for your site or blog! With some simple copy and pasting you can add three different widgets to your Web site or blog:

LightBox: A graphic that you can add to your blog post, panel or header. When a reader clicks on it , flauntR appears in a popup.

iFrame: Allows readers to enjoy flauntR without even a pop up, meaning flauntR sits right in your blog.

Linkback: Allows you to set up an image or set of images for editing or viewing through flauntR.

FlauntR is up to over 50,000 regular users and is growing by several thousand each day. In the future we’re going to be telling them about all the sites and blogs that have integrated with flauntR. That means, use flauntR on your blog and you’ll get another vehicle to help spread the word.

If you’re like me you are constantly frustrated when things don’t work the way they should. What if you could have the opportunity to take someones’ idea and make it better? RedesignMe is probably the closest you’ll ever get.The Web site’s goal is simple: improve products by collectively rethinking how they are built, work, or function. Since so many everyday items are designed by engineers – not users – we as consumers certainly have our hands full.

Registration on the site is free. Here’s how it operates:

- Take a picture or make a movie of your struggles with a product
- Type what you don’t like or what you think is failing on the item
- Suggest a redesign or state what you would do differently
- Let the community comment on your suggested changes

Now you’re probably wondering why should you share your ideas and make someone else even more money. According to the site, much of the data they collect will be communicated to the original designers and producers. How this is facilitated is not clear.

Among the site’s uses: Inventors can get ideas (steal?); companies can receive feedback on products (focus group); be entertained by other people’s gripes and ideas – and submit your own.

The site is hoping they can generate enough interest to get investors’ attention. Will crowdsourcing really have an impact on products and their designers? That remains to be seen, but for now you can vent about that confusing advanced doorbell system or suggest ways to make ATM machines operate faster.

As for me, I’m still waiting for a machine that will write these blog entries for me!
