Finally, MySpace woke up from slumber and launches enhancements to its MySpaceID product. In case you may have forgotten already or unaware at all, MySpaceID lets any website to access MySpace’s social graph. Meaning, you as a MySpace user can link your MySpace profiles, friends, and other activities on the site to any websites. But a more important part of this announcement is MySpace’s integration to the new Yahoo homepage which is curently under closed private beta testing mode.

Interestingly, the integration of MySpace social stream into the new Yahoo homepage gives MySpace something to compete with Facebook while Yahoo with Google. Facebook has Facebook Connect while Google has Google Friend Connect. Both service offers an open sociability to their sites. This is something which both Facebook and Google could not simply do. And it is very clever for MySpace and Yahoo to have done it this way.

Going back to the MySpace OpenID, we are given with the following three new features:

MySpace Activity streaming to any websites

Easy Authentication through the integration of OAuth and OpenID into MySpaceID, enabling you to securely login to any website that uses MySpaceID using your MySpace credentials

Developer Resources – The new MySpaceID workflow makes it easier for developers to create and manage their applications. It streamlines the build process and makes configuring an application easier than ever.

and pretty soon you can also start publishing content from on your MySpace site from MySpace partner sites.

If you got excited when Sydney Morning Herald reported that the full copies of U2’s latest album No Line in the Horizon have found their way to the web, you might want to stop scouring the web to find ways of obtaining it the not so legal way. MySpace is offering an alternative, by way of a streaming preview of the full tracks of the new U2 album right on its Music site.Yes folks, all the 11 tracks in their full stereo sound quality right on the MySpace Music site. I am listening to it right now as I write this post. And Eric was right, after so many years U2 is still the best. And I’m not saying this because I’m as old as Eric (or probably I am). I just love U2’s music – always have and always will.

So, if you visit the U2 page on MySpace music you will see a preview of just one track from the album, but as Eric mentioned, you can click on the album to see the full listing of each of the tracks and then listen to them as well.

And since you are already there, if you are an avid U2 fan, you might want to pre-order the new album. Too bad I can do it since MySpace Music only accepts pre-orders from users in UK and US.

Anyway, enjoy listening to U2’s new songs folks.

Facebook has received quite a number of coverage from various tech blogs that we usually read and monitor, this week. Ealier this week, you may have heard of the invasion of the “25 Things” Meme. Then it was followed by a statement coming from a former MySpace employee saying that Facebook will soon beat MySpace. Finally, a lot of talks have surfaced regarding Facebook’s plan of offering more mobile services. These three items would have made Facebook the king of this week’s news, if not for Google’s Friend Connect’s Social Bar destroying Facebook’s streak. So, let’s recap on what was hot items this week. First on the list is the spread of the “25 Things About Me” meme on Facebook. I was personally a witness to how my friends have participated in this meme, like it was 1998 in Facebook. The meme gives 25 things about the personal who’ve forwarded you his answers, and after reading that person’s answer to the question, it’s now your turn to spread the love by sharing it with your Facebook friends. Now, is it bad or good, if you may ask? The answer depends on how you use Facebook and its social networking features. But honestly, it was an utter waste of time and space on Facebook. Sorry folks.

What follows the meme was another buzz generated by a Sydney Morning Herald report saying that Facebook will soon beat MySpace. This is based on the growing number of Facebook userbase. This came in right after we wrote about the latest ComScore re-ranking of the top social networks wherein Twitter emerged as the number 3 site and Facebook number 1 with MySpace number 2.

Then Facebook rolled a minor feature which enables you to rate a friend’s updates or activities in Facebook via a “like” rating feature. This was a good feature as it eliminates the need to post trivial comments to your friends’ profiles if you happen to like what they just shared or updates they’ve made.

Finally, Facebook was reportedly working with mobile phone developers to offer more mobile Facebook services. According to Bloomberg, Facebook is seeking more partnerships with wireless-service providers and phone makers to beef up its mobile services. This is in addition to its current application in the iPhone and BlackBerry devices. More particularly, Facebook wants to have the synchronization feature enabled.

There you go, some nice coverage of Facebook this past week. But wait, stealing some hype and buzz from an almost Facebook week was the announcement coming from Google Friend Connect about its new social bar. This Social Bar is a nifty Google Friend Connect feature which lets you make your sites/blogs more social by adding a social bar on either the top or bottom of your site. The Social bar contains your Google Friend Connect activities and provides a facility for your site visitors to quickly socialize with you and other members of your site.

If you take glimpse of Compete’s latest re-ranking of social networks based on monthly visits, you’d not be surprised that Facebook is the no.1 site, followed by MySpace. But wait, somewhere not far behind at number 3, all of sudden is Twitter. So, are we seeing the inevitable? Facebook’s dominance as the top social site and Twitter’s dominance as the pseudo-social networking/microblogging/lifestreaming site?

Of course we’ve already told you before the Facebook has grown bigger than MySpace in December. And the gap is even getting bigger since December 2008.

Interestingly, Twitter which was previously ranked #22 is now ranked #3. Thanks to the surge of monthly visits that the site has been receiving. Most of these monthly visits are repeat visitors though and not really unique visitors. This is understable since Twitter is more of a microblogging site than a social network. If you could see from the chart, Twitter only got around 5million plus UV. And yet, managed to get into number 3 because of the total monthly visitors which count those returning visitors.

Now, if Twitter manages to get more unique visitors in the coming days, which mean more new users registering at the site, soon it may even overtake MySpace which seemed to be stagnating in terms of growth.

Twitter has the potential to grow, no doubt about that. But to achieve Facebook’s level of usage, membership activities, and perhaps usage would mean that Twitter has to become a full social networking site. Unfortunately that might diminish its novelty.

For now, let us be contend with Facebook as the number one social network, and Twitter as the number one microblogging site.

Question and Answer sites have been around for quite some time now. But despite the its being useful, it is one online niche that has never really received too much attention. So, we can count only a handful of Q&A sites which have managed to live on. Here are five top Q&A sites which will all give you answers to your questions, no matter how mundane or burning those questions are. The list include the newly launched Wikianswers from Jimmy Wales who became well known for the Wikipedia.

Mahalo Answers

Jason Calcanis, founder of “human-powered” search engine calls Mahalo Answers as a knowledge exchange site where you can post questions which are answered by other users. In case you’re not in the loop, Mahalo is a search engine which utilizes human editors when selecting which sites on the web to crawl. Mahalo Answers sits right inside the Mahalo.com site. Mahalo Answers stands unique from other Q&A sites by allowing users to give tips to those who answers their questions. Users can earn Mahalo Dollars, which is a virtual currency with a one-to-one rate with U.S. dollars. Aside from this, Mahalo Answers also run Google Ads which is of course a way to sustain the service.

Yahoo Answers

Among the Q&A sites, Yahoo Answers is among the most established and widely used. December data from comScore showed that the site was able to register 114 million unique pageviews. Yahoo describes it Answers service as “a one place where the world shares what they know to help each other out.” Typically, you can ask questions, answer other people’s questions, find out what other people are asking. To participate, you need to register a nickname. You may use your current nickname attached to your current Yahoo services account or use a different nickname for your activities in Yahoo! Answers. You may also add cutesy avatars to represent your in the Yahoo Answers community.

Wiki Answers

Wiki Answers (difference from Wikianswers.com)

Wiki Answers is Answers.com’s take on the Wiki model. It is sort of a mini-Answers.com site with the Wiki twist. Anyone can participate and contribute to the development of the Wiki-Question-and-Answer site. Wiki Answers’ unique pageviews in December according to comScore was at around 27.4 million. Like the other Q&A sites, Wiki Answers lets you answer questions, post your own question, search for questions asked by other members and more.

LinkedIn Answers

LinkedIn Answers is different from the other Q&A sites for the simple reason that it was created not for the sole purpose of providing a basic Q&A site but rather to be used as a social networking tool. Since it is tied up with LinkedIn, the business-oriented social networking site, the questions asked on the site are work and business related. So, be cautious when answering questions since your audience will be fellow professionals.

Wikianswers

Not to be confused with the other Q&A site with almost the same name, Wikianswers is spelled as one word, and was from Jimmy Wales, more popularly known for his work in Wikipedia. Wikianswers brings the same formula and technology that made Wikipedia a successul open encylopedia. Hence, you have a question and answer site/service utilizing the power of the Wiki platform, and dependent on user participation to create a vast resource of knowledge. You can immediately ask questions or look for answers to question already posted on the site using category browsing or topics browsing.

Like we didn’t know that this is going to happen? We all see this coming right? Facebook continously growing in terms of pageviews and unique visitors, leaving behind MySpace? Well, it will just be a matter of time before every social networking fanatics turn to Facebook for their daily fix of – telling the world what they’ve just eaten, what they’ve just finished reading, which cause they’ve just joined, and practically any minute details of their lives. And did we say, they do all of those in a vibrant and eternally alive social networking site?

Facebook is now two times bigger the size of MySpace, and so TechCrunch reported based on the latest ComScore Metrics. If you’re still not convince, the figures say in December Facebook was able to pull in 222 million visitors. Compared with the 200 million unique worldwide visitors it had in November 2000, this amounts to a 10.8% month-over-month growth rate. And another way of looking it is that 22% of the total internet users visited Facebook in December. As for MySpace’s visitors, well it’s only around 125 million.

For the page view numbers of MySpace and Facebook, the trend is no different. Facebook’s got 80 billion monthly page views against 43 billion of MySpace.

Alright enough of these numbers. So, Facebook is now bigger than MySpace, so what? Are the numbers the only thing that matter in the social networking site wars? Apparently, MySpace didn’t think so. In a comment sent to TC, MySpace say that despite the lower eyeballs, MySpace still managed to stay profitable especially in this trying times. Being on top of the social networking industry in the U.S. brings MySpace more profit and monetization opportunities. And that’s what matters especially in times like this.

Point well taken. And granting that MySpace is still raking in more money than Facebook because of a successful site ads management, still the unique visitors and user engagement on the site still matters, especially in the long run.

MySpace maybe earning more than Facebook right now. But with the eyeballs and pageviews that Facebook is getting and will continue to get, it will only be a matter of time before Facebook eclipsed even MySpace’s revenues.

Facebook just needs a good “site monetization program.”

When this game came out last year, I had second thoughts of getting it because of its price – $9.99. But I told myself, what the heck, I love the PC game. And was I disappointed? Certainly not. The dollar I spent for it was definitely well worth the fun and enjoyment I got from playing it especially during the Holiday Break. The iPhone’s Sim City is an addictive game. If you’ve enjoyed building cities from the ground up in your PC, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t enjoy doing the same thing on your iPhone.
Another expensive game and yet worth every penny you’d spend for it. It’s a full-featured platform game for your iPhone and perhaps even the best game in the said genre. Rolando features fully interactive environments, intuitive controls, and four unique worlds with 36 fun-filled and challenging game levels.
Who says Snail Mail is dead and long gone due to email? Well, at least in this game the old reliable way of delivering postal mail is still alive and racing. Guide Turbo the Snail in delivering mails as he races through 50 levels or three game modes – postal, challenge, and time trials.

Nanosaur 2($2.99)

This is another one of my favorite games for the iPhone. Fortunately I got it when it was up for sale at $.99 (current price is currently $2.99).

Amidst the frenzy in the ongoing CES event at Las Vegas which are dominated primarily by consumer electronics companies, MySpace was able to get some mileage thanks to its partnership with Intel, Yahoo and Toshiba. The deal will bring the MySpace experience on your TV sets, thanks to Yahoo’s Connected TV service and Toshiba which will be the first to showcase the MySpace TV Widget on their new products.

MySpace TV is being developed on Widget Channel, a new TV application which is being co-developed by Intel and Yahoo. This will allow you to do your MySpace activities directly from your TV as well as receive updates from your MySpace network.

Specifically, MySpace TV Widget

Receive Friend Updates

Read and respond to Messages

Receive Friend Request notifications

See friends’ Status and Mood updates

Publish personal Status and Mood updates

Browse photos

Browse profiles

The MySpace TV Widget will consist of the MySpace TV Dock which will contain links to the “My Profile”, “Messages”, “Friend Requests” and “Status Updates” channel of your MySpace account, and the MySpace Sidebar which will be displayed on your TV screen.

Once the MySpace Sidebar is displayed, you can then interact with the MySpace environment and lets you navigate all functionality of the widget in an organized, familiar and friendly way.

To use the MySpace TV, you need to have access to your MySpace ID and of course the Toshiba TV which is the first to carry the said feature. Hopefully, other TV manufacturers will get the MySpace TV Channel too. Unless of course the idea of social networking on your TV screen does not appeal to you.

We know it’s the closest to the impossible thing to happen – the union of MySpace and Facebook as we all know that these two top social networks are nemesis for so long now. It would probably take a lot to make them work together, oh well at least Meebo wants to try as the official Meebo blog announced that Meebo now support IM sessions from MySpace and Facebook right smack into the Meebo IM client.

It took Meebo several years before it finally supports Facebook and MySpace, joining other IM platforms currently supported by Meebo including GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, Flixter and AIM. Aside from Facebook and MySpace, Meebo also now supports both Yahoo Messenger and MSN Live Messenger.

What this new feature enables you to do is basically to let you enter your Facebook and MySpace account and then let you chat with your friends in both social networks in the Meebo IM Box. As Eric of TC noted, the Meebo-MySpace integration was done through the official MySpace API, so expect to experience a seamless integration between the two from now on.

However, for the Facebook-Meebo integration, this might get stalled later on as Meebo engineers just used reverse engineering with the Facebook IM. So, if Facebook decided to to something with its IM protocols, Meebo will no choice but to turn off the features. However, we really see don’t see any reason why Facebook would do such thing. After all, it’s the age of the Open Web. Everyone seems to be interconnecting and Facebook has even launched its Facebook Connect features. Although it’s a different thing from IM integration, the fact is, Facebook is sending a signal it is open for collaboration with other social media sites.

If there’s one problem with this new features of Meebo, it’s got to be the fact that it will certainly propel its growth to tremendous bounds as it currently is. And this could probably one reason why Facebook would not want to work with Meebo.

In time for its upcoming annual meeting in Davos-Klosters next month, the WEF has launched various social media tools that it hopes would generate more interests to the WEF’s cause from the online crowd.

Among WEF’s social media initiatives include:

Twitter account for the Davos annual meeting

Facebook account for WEF

MySpace account for WEF

OpenForum Wiki

Flickr Photo Group

and its own video streaming services on its website

live broadcast of web conferences through Mogulus and Qik

It’s good to know that international organizations such as the World Economic Organizations are beginning to realize the value of social networking and social media tools in pursuing their advocacy work. With the popularity of these online tools among people coming from all walks of life, it would definitely be a great way of reaching out and educating the online masses. Hopefully, online users would partake of what the WEF and other organizations with similar initiatives have to offer.

Available today for MySpace users in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India and Ireland, is MySpace Toolbar. This is MySpace’s latest move to ensure that members would have instant access to their MySpace as they do their daily web surfing habits. MySpace Toolbar runs on IE 6 or higher and Firefox 2.0 or higher.

If you install MySpace toolbar on your PC’s browser, it will provide your activity notifications, new friend requests, new messages, comments and Friend updates as well. Hence, the new toolbar is another way for MySpace users to connect constantly as well as to stay in touch with their Myspace friends.

Key features of the MySpace Toolbar includes the ff:

Automatic connectivity to MySpace without entering your email and password

No need to refresh the browser for updates

Real-time New Messages, New Comments, New Friend Requests alerts

Real-time Friend Activity Updates

Update My Mood and Status

See Friends’ Mood and Status

Search the Web, People, and MySpace using Google-powered search engine

Unfortunately, MySpace Toolbar doesn’t support uploading of photos directly from the toolbar your MySpace Profile page. But MySpace promises to roll out this feature sometime in the near future.

To get MySpace Toolbar on your PC’s browser, you may download it here.

Hoping to leverage on rival Facebook and also to boost its mobile phone presence, MySpace is launching a new feature of its mobile MySpace interface that would let members watch video clips from their MySpace pages as well as TV shows on their mobile phones. The new feature will be made available soon on various mobile phones including the BlackBerry Bold, Palm Centro, Motorola Q9, LG Voyager, Nokia N95 and Samsung Instinct.

The new MySpace mobile feature would enable you not only to watch video on your own homepages but from your MySpace’s friends’ pages as well. Likewise, you can also watch commercially produced videos from celebrity news and gossip website TMZ, the National Hockey League, National Geographic, Onion and others.

The new service will be provided by MySpace to its members for free, but of course we don’t expect MySpace not to do something without getting anything from it. In the case of this new feature, it will be in the form of mobile ads.

If you’re wondering if this new feature will be made available also on the iPhone, the answer is a resounding no since the video streaming will be done from the MySpace’s pages instead of being downloaded onto the phones. Hence it will not be available on the iPhone which plays only downloaded videos. Although MySpace is not closing its doors on video downloads, but this will have to wait at a later date.

This new feature of MySpace mobile is being implemented in partnership with RipCode company who will be in-charge of making sure that video contents can be streamed on various mobile handsets eventhough they have different platforms.

Sprint users would be glad to know that they can now upload photos and videos which they took using their Sprint mobile phones directly from their phone to various online services including MySpace, Photobucket and YouTube and other social media sites. This is definitely a good service would be most useful during the Holiday Season where picture-taking and video capturing would be higly in-demand during festivities.

Through Sprint’s Picture Mail service, you can now directly upload your digital photos and videos if your mobile phone belongs to around 30 Sprint phones which carry the said features. These phones include popular mobile handset including Samsung Instinct, LG Rumor, Sanyo Katana and MOTORAZR2.

The new feature was made possible with the use of the Verisign Xoomerang platform which enables users to easily capture and publish video and still images to those 30 online services. Although currently, the service is available only for MySpace, Photobucket and YouTube. But both Sprint and VeriSign promises to make the new service available to other sites as well.

It’s ironic that an old band swoops in and takes control of a new technology. I also find it amusing that I will be making the album the first CD I have purchased in about 5 years. It ain’t vinyl, but I still feel nostalgic.

The band might be long gone, but who understudies can’t put on a good show too. What’s old is new again. If you’ve checked out the album on MySpace, we’d love to hear what you think.

MySpace just launched a new internal application called MySpace Primetime which would allow you to embed a video widget on your MySpace profile and homepages. That MySpace Primetime video widget is your ticket to watching contents coming from the ever growing Hulu as well as other MySpace video content partners including Sony and Warner Bros.

Embedding the MySpace Primetime application on your profile would allow you to search for and watch video content from Hulu, and when we say video content we mean premium content such as high-res episodes of show like Roommates and Special Delivery. It’s a free-to-download application for your Myspace profile folks, so what are you waiting for download it now, or read on some more.

For MySpace, this adds another revenue stream since the the application is ad-supported by multiple ad-solutions coming from MySpace advertising partners. So, you can just imagine how profitable this new application would be for MySpace if it becomes popular. And I have no doubt that it will become such a hit. Hulu is gaining better grounds in the video streaming market, especially because of the high-quality video content that it provides to users.

To add the MySpace Primetime Application to your MySpace Profile or homepag, follow this steps outlined by the MySpace Primetime application team:

Step 1 – Visit http://www.myspace.com/primetimeapp

Click the “Add this App” button in the top right hand corner

Choose where you want the application to appear on your profile and how often you want it updated

Click on Add

And basically that’s it. Enjoy premium video content right smack on your MySpace profile.
