Some people feel podcasting is a lot like the month of March – in like a lion and out like a lamb.

As with any over-hyped, silver bullet-labeled medium, there is no room for success – only failure. But if you are willing to look a little deeper, you will find that podcasting is still a viable option for content delivery.

Everyone knows that iTunes is the most popular place to discover interesting podcasts. However, there are many sites across the Web where you can uncover some wonderful ear candy. Here are some of our favorites.

Podcast Alley

One of the first on the scene, Podcast Alley is a shadow of its once robust self. That being said, it is still a valuable portal. Featuring the Top 10 podcasts, as voted on by the listeners, the site makes it easy to uncover audio content. You can stream directly on the site or download to your computer/device.

With close to 65,000 podcasts all you need are an audio device and an open mind.

Podcast.com

The best domain name on the planet – yet it was late out of the gate – missing most of the format’s initial boom.

Podcasts are divided into categories – by subject or language. Random shows are featured with thumbnails on the homepage.

Currently the site boasts 85,000 podcasts. You can also follow them on Twitter or join their Facebook group.

Podomatic

Designed as both a portal and podcast facilitator, Podomatic gives a free, customizable podcast page to show creators. They offer detailed audience statistics and have a growing online community.

The homepage features the top three podcasts of the day and lets you view a map and see what people are listening to based on their geography.

A podcaster social network allows producers and hosts help each other out.

Podbean

Billed as a “Podcast Social Subscribing site,” Podbean lets registered users collect their favorite podcasts and house them in one location. Shows can be shared with friends or recommended to other users. One of the cool features of the site is that you can see what other podcasters or listeners are fans of; a pretty neat way to get turned on to new shows.

PodcastDirectory

Don’t let the Web 1.0 look fool you, plenty of podcasters frequent the site and there are a ton of shows located here if you’re willing to put the time in to look.

RSS feeds are available for the last 100 uploaded, the 10 most recent, and the 10 top rated – a cool way to listen to something different.

LearnOutLoud

LearnOutLoud.com is your one-stop destination for audio and video learning. You can browse over 20,000 educational audio books, MP3 downloads, podcasts, and videos.

Much of the content here is for sale, but there are some free nuggets too, like the gratis audio book of the day.

If you’re looking for biographies, self-help content, or to learn a language, this is your destination for well-produced content.

Blubrry

For podcasters who are looking to make money from their hard work (yes, podcasting is time consuming!), Blubrry has been a Godsend. The site is a podcast community and directory, but it also allows podcasters to host content, track stats, and perhaps most importantly, get paid.

Search for shows by category or tag and listen directly on the site. Squeeze some more juice out of the podcasting experience with Blubrry.

We’d love to hear more about your podcasting expereinecsed and how you search for shows. Leave a comment below!

The Web site, owned and operated by job board vet Chris Russell, streams jobcasts daily, dishing career advice talk radio 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

(Full disclosure – My career advice podcast, the Working Podcast, is part of the elite roster.

Upon entering the website, the live streaming radio automatically comes up. However, if there is a particular topic you want to hear about, there are blog posts to read up on topics or audio clips to listen to such as: mistakes college graduates make during the interview process, twitter job hunt tips, or how to avoid resume blackholes.

If you are looking for relevant and practical topics to listen to or read on work-related topics, Job Radio is a must visit.

Current contributors include:

Jobacle.com
Jobs in Pods
The Job Search Guy
The Savvy Job Seeker
Total Picture Radio

The site is sponsored by job board SimplyHired and also features a blog that delivers career news and information.

The pop-up player can be embedded on your very own career Web site. This is a great way to add an audio component to your job blog. Look for an iPhone app in the near future.
