6 Speech-to-Text Transcription Apps and Services

For years, voice transcription technology has been available but terrible.  Unless you talked like a robot, the typed result looked nothing like what you said.  Now there’s a new round of services for those who are better at talking with your mouth rather than your thumbs, and they’ve gotten a lot better.  Here are our six faves.

Dragon Dictation (iPhone)

This new transcription app has been slobberingly adored by Mashable, The New York Times, and the rest of the web.  It’s free for a limited time only, and does a mighty fine job.  Once you’ve spoken, you can save the text in an email, SMS or onto your clipboard.  The basic design is very user-friendly, and the price is right.

QuickVoice (iPhone)

This one costs $0.99 and doesn’t let you email your notes out of your iPhone, but it does have a handy “pause” feature that allows you to take a little break without having to start a new file.

MyCaption (Blackberry)

This is a useful app for the Blackberry, but don’t let the $1.99 download price fool you.  They have a slate of complicated and expensive plans for emailing the transcriptions out of your device that should make you wary.

iPhone Hack: TwitterKeys on iPhone

twitterkeys You probably already know (and use) the TwitterKeys put together by TheNextWeb. If not, TwitterKeys is a small tool that helps you quickly copy/paste UTF-8 symbols to Twitter. It is a fun way how to customize your tweets and make them stand out of the crowd. TwitterKeys works not only with the Twitter, but also Facebook and other sites supporting UTF-8 encoding.

It works great if you tweet from the web or desktop clients, but as may of you use iPhone for tweeting it is nearly impossible to use special symbols there. But I have found a way that will let you, at least, use some of the symbols – follow some simple steps described below to add this feature.

6 Easy Ways to Track Your Blog Success

analytics-blog

In new year, everything starts afresh and so do bloggers. Aside from resolutions and blogging plans, it’s time to evaluate our blogging progress from previous year. Some of you may not be a fan in tracking stats but in order to plan well ahead, at least a simple review is needed. I don’t plan to bombard you with multiple tools, but some easy, accessible ways you can do for your blog evaluation:

1. Number & Quality of Comments

Most of the time, we are advised to track which post received the most comments as an indicator of its popularity. Truth is, quality factor is equally important as to get 50 times of ‘good post!’ is unable to compete with 40 comments with insightful, continuous discussions. Of course, time factor can affect since newer posts may need longer times to accumulate comments comparing to older ones.

2. Number of Retweets

You don’t need me to explain to you how ‘big’ Twitter is nowadays. If you’re going full force with social media as an publicity tool for your blog, you need to install tweetcount widgets like Tweetmeme (http://tweetmeme.com) or Backtype (http://www.backtype.com/widgets/tweetcount). Their reliabilities are unquestionable. Further more a visible widget earns you 50:50 chance for readers to retweet. Blog author has nothing to lose but a higher chance to get discovered. Therefore make sure you have the ‘WIIFM’ (What’s In It For Me) factor for all your posts, make them irresistible to go viral in various social networks.

Anyone Can Create an iPhone App With AppMakr

Recently, I’ve found myself lying in bed at 3am, eyes wide open, thinking to myself, ‘there’s NOT an app for that!’

What I lack in technical expertise, I make up for with ideas.  Unfortunately for me, these days, the guy with the coding experience is the guy who makes bank.

But there are workarounds.  Wix helps my Flash deficiencies.  SquareSpace helps me avoid WordPress updates.  And now AppMakr can turn me into an iPhone genius.

A combination of RSS feeds and searches will help make your Website’s content available for app building. Multiple feeds?  No problem.  Mash up your Twitter, YouTube and blog feed – add a few customizations – and you could be on your way to earning cash. Another great feature is address book syncing. Now you have the option to add Facebook profile picture and homepage to your contacts saved on iPhone. You may leave already assigned pictures and links that are on your device.

To be honest, I noticed that some of the pictures added to my contacts isn’t right – maybe that’s just me naming my contacts awkwardly.
