Parents Need a Vacation Too

baby cubaTime off: Check
Suitcase: Check
Baby: Check
Destination: Unknown

If you’re a mom or dad you already know that traveling gets a new twist. Things that used to be easy now are…well…more complicated.

Have Baby Will Travel hopes to change all that. Created by a first-time mom, the Website showcases first-hand accounts that are designed to offer inspiration and motivation for on-the-go parents.

From packing to tips on air travel to family-specific hotel reviews, moms and dads around the world can get prepared for their next family trip.

The site offers a series of articles and links, but what’s clearly missing is a Web 2.0 twist. While there are forums, a site like this would be much more complete if parents could initiate conversations and share photos and media with each other via the Web.

The site’s design is very basic, yet the domain name and subject matter scream potential.

Need to feed your baby in Cuba or pack an all-inclusive diaper bag? If so, Have Baby Will Travel is for you. We like the idea and hope that this straight “from the basement” site grows up.

Find Anyone or Anything With Hoosgot

Twitter asks “What are you doing?” and now Hoosgot wants to know “Who’s Got…?”

Unlike many of the popular Answer services out there, Hoosgot is designed for folks already immersed in online communities and blogging.

To find out who has what you are looking for, simply include the word “hoosgot” into a blog post or a Twitter entry.  The post will automatically be picked up and posted on the Hoosgot homepage.

If someone in Cyberspace has the answer to your question, they have the ability to  respond in the comments of the post or by messaging you on Twitter (@hoosgot).

Since a Website of this nature is ripe for spam, the Hoosgot team have installed some hardcore, back-end spam fighting systems.

I tested the system the other day with a very simple inquiry for the general public: “Hoosgot the skills to tweak a Wordpress template on the cheap?”

I didn’t receive a single response.

It might not be the best question in the world, but it reaffirms the obvious: A site like this can only survive if users jump onboard - fast.  Whether or not they will remains to be seen.  One thing that makes Hoosgot intriguing is that your question has the potential to be seen across the Web, not just on a single site a la Yahoo! Answers.

Now Hoosgot a million dollars for the RotorBlog team?

Monitor Your Kids Social Networking Activities in Imbee

imbee-logo-260-home.jpgRealizing the potential danger of the open web, more specifically social networks, is the main reason why a social network exclusively for kids called Imbee was created. Imbee is like your usual social networking site in terms of features, look, and socializing aspects. But unlike other social networks which anyone can join even kids who are smart enough to change their year of birth when registering, kids could not register with Imbee all by themselves. Create Your Own Social Network at OneDomus

one_domus.jpgA first look you’d think that OneDumus is just another one of them social networks in the likes of Friendster, mySpace and Facebook. But when you subscribe and become a member of OneDomus, you’d soon find out that there is more to it than just being an ordinary social network.

OneDomus is a fairly new social network created by young Filipino-American webtrepreneur Eric Wallace. Previously known as TheOosh, OneDomus has evolved into just your usual social networks into something more. So, what’s make OneDomus, which incidentally means, One Home, is the ability for members or subscribers to create their own social network within the OneDomus community but is actually independent of OneDomus as a whole. Sounds confusing? Continue reading the story called Create Your Own Social Network at OneDomus

Faith-Based Social Community Godkut Launches

godkutAre all those provocative photos posted on MySpace and Facebook one big sin? I’ll leave that up to you and your moral conscience to figure out. I guess God didn’t want to wait for you to make a decision so he has “created” a faith-based community Web site for the religiously-inclined, Godkut.

Timing is everything, as the site launches several days after Christmas.

While taboo talking points on many social communities, conversations about faith, spirituality and religion are encouraged on Godkut. God takes center stage and those photos from Beerfest ‘07 take a backseat. The site also welcomes atheists and agnostics who are willing to debate in a “non-offensive” manner.

The social community aspects are the run of the mill type items: blogs, forums, chat rooms and sharing media. There is also one-click video recording that allows you to save the file directly to your profile. Get that sermon ready!

Godkut is taking on similar Web sites such as MyChurch and Youthroots. We wish Godkut luck. Actually, they might not need it if God is on their side.

Wikia Brings Wikis to the Mainstream

wikiaWikia is the new free Web-hosting site dedicated to giving growing wiki communities a place to share whatever they are passionate about. They currently support 4,700 communities in more than 70 languages and use open source MediaWiki software. What makes Wikia unique is that it allows all users to edit any Wikia web page for absolutely free - you don’t even need an account, although one is recommended. In short, hosting your wiki on Wikia saves users the time and technical know-how it takes to maintain a wiki site.

If having a wiki site wide open for free to the public sounds like you’re subjecting yourself to major problems, fear not. Wikia prides itself on having excellent spam control and cross-wiki vandal blocking allowing you to focus on content rather than correcting bad edits. Wikia also boasts of having Youtube integration, notifications via email, the use of calendars on the page, and parser function. If that wasn’t enough, Wikia also offers skins for a more customized look, widgets, and the ability to import images from Flickr. You can also automatically publish your articles to blogosphere.

What the Wikia site lacks in flare it certainly makes up for in usability. I have never been to a site this easy to navigate. With so many features and a seamless and easy to use interface all for free, Wikia claims to be the best place to start a wiki site and in my opinion it’s true. It will be interesting to see how quickly Wikia takes off when they officially launch on Jan 7th.

Safe Web Browsing for Kids With Pikluk

piklukMost parents are concerned to let their children use computers over the fear that they’ll either stumble across something their innocent eyes shouldn’t see or they’ll find a way to render your computer useless.  Pikluk helps restrict your child’s online exploration and keeps the rest of your computer applications safe and sound.

Upon download, the Pikluk Browser will allow children to only access Websites that parents have deemed appropriate and added to a safe list.  When in full- screen mode the browser will take over your computer desktop, keeping applications and files inaccessible for children.  This mode cannot be exited without a parent entering a password or holding down the CTRL+ALT+HOME keys for 10 seconds (a fail-safe last resort).

Pikluk also offers e-mail that works off the same premise.  Children can only e-mail people that their parents have approved.

A privately held company based in Austin, Texas, PikLuk aims to let children use the best of the Internet’s resources for their growth and education.  They are currently looking for investors and hope to fill a void that other Web browers have not addressed comprehensively.

Minimum requirements: 1Gz or faster processor; at least 256MB of RAM; Windows XP or Windows Vista; Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher; latest version of Flash.

The company has a tight privacy policy that guarantees your information (and your child’s) will never be shared with any third party.
